What documents do you need?
You need a passport and one Canadian status document. RBC asks for a passport valid for more than 6 months. Status documents include your COPR, work permit (IMM 1442), study permit, or an IRCC letter. Students also need a letter of acceptance or enrolment for the current year. RBC also accepts Canadian property owners with a deed, a current property tax assessment, or a title search from the last 90 days.
RBC asks every new client for a tax residency declaration within 90 days. If you are still a tax resident of China when you apply, you declare that. See ID to open a bank account for the full list.
How does China’s USD 50,000 quota work?
China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) sets the rules. SAFE raised the yearly quota for an individual buying foreign currency from USD 20,000 to USD 50,000 in 2007. HSBC China’s guide, effective May 31, 2025, still describes an annual facilitation quota of USD 50,000 per person.
- Inside the quota: you buy foreign currency at your bank with valid ID and state the purpose.
- Above the quota: the bank asks for documents that show a current-account purpose, such as tuition or medical bills. The documents must be genuine and cannot be reused.
- Capital transactions (investing or moving assets abroad) are still controlled. Ask your bank in China before you plan one.
- Cash withdrawals abroad with a Chinese bank card are limited to RMB 100,000 per person per year. The daily limit is RMB 10,000 per card. This SAFE rule has applied since January 1, 2018.
Each person has their own quota for their own money. HSBC China’s guide says you may not split a transaction to get around the rules, and you may not lend your quota, borrow someone else’s, or let others use yours. RBC notes that pre-arrival wires are subject to the foreign exchange rules and capital controls of your home country.
Worked example: funding a first year in Canada
Wei and Lin are a couple moving to Vancouver as permanent residents. Each has savings in a bank account in their own name. Each wants to move $40,000 (CAD) of their own money, $80,000 in total, for rent, a car and savings.
- RBC’s pre-arrival account is for one person, and joint accounts open only after arrival. So each opens an account in their own name. $40,000 is under RBC’s $75,000 limit per account.
- Each buys foreign currency with their own savings, inside their own USD 50,000 yearly quota. $40,000 (CAD) is less than USD 50,000. Their bank in China converts and sends Canadian dollars, since RBC rejects other currencies.
- They keep the bank’s purchase records and wire receipts. A Canadian bank may ask about the source of large deposits.
- They carry only a small amount of cash. If they carry $10,000 (CAD) or more on arrival, they must declare it.
The real cost is the exchange rate and wire fees on both sides. Compare routes in how to bring money from China. Canadian banks ask more questions about large transfers. Read why your bank asks where money came from.
Your first weeks in Canada
- Branch visit. RBC emails a branch appointment, usually for 1 to 5 business days after your arrival date. Bring your original passport, your visa or permit, and the documents you used to apply. At TD, book your visit well inside the 75 days.
- Activation. You get your debit card and full access to the account.
- SIN. Apply for your SIN so you can open savings accounts and GICs that pay interest.
- Proof of funds. RBC says its deposit confirmation email can be used as proof of funds for IRCC, if you are asked.
- Fees. Ask when your newcomer fee waiver ends. In your first year you can also ask for a $0 a month basic account.
WeChat Pay and Alipay are not Canadian bank accounts. For daily spending, rent and payroll, you need a Canadian account with a debit card.
Will your Chinese credit history count?
We found no Canadian bank program that names China. The Nova Credit bank partnerships announced in 2024 named countries such as India, Mexico and the Philippines, but not China. Plan to build Canadian credit from zero. Most big banks give newcomers a starter card with no Canadian history. See credit cards with no credit history.
Mistakes to avoid
- Informal money exchangers. Unofficial channels can break Chinese foreign exchange rules. Canadian banks can also freeze money when the source is unclear.
- Wrong currency. RBC and CIBC take Canadian dollars only.
- Missing TD’s 75-day window. Book your branch visit for your first weeks.
- Fake bank websites. Apply only on the bank’s own site or by its listed number. Banks do not charge to open an account. See banking scams.
Offer as of October 10, 2026. RBC gives up to 30,000 Avion Rewards points for an eligible account opened online before arrival. The account must be opened between July 27 and November 2, 2026. You get 15,000 points for activating in a branch within 12 months. You get 15,000 more for a deposit of at least $2,000. TD’s newcomer offers end November 2, 2026. National Bank says pre-arrival applications and the pre-arrival wire are available only until November 3, 2026. Banks change offers often; confirm on the bank’s site.
