How much is a monthly transit pass in Canada?

This table shows the regular adult price for one month of unlimited local transit, as of October 2026. Where a city uses a fare cap instead of a pass, we show the cap. A fare cap means you pay per ride until you reach a set amount in the month, then the rest of your rides are free.

Fare caps: why some cities no longer sell a monthly pass

Three of the cities above now use fare capping. You tap the same card, phone or bank card every time. The system counts what you have paid. When you reach the cap, it stops charging you until the next month starts.

  • Toronto: after 47 paid TTC fares in a calendar month, the rest of your TTC rides are free. Most monthly passes ended on August 31, 2026. Read our TTC fare cap guide.
  • Ottawa: with PRESTO you never pay more than $12.25 a day or $138.50 a month.
  • Edmonton: with an Arc card you never pay more than $10.50 a day or $102 a month.

A cap is fairer for newcomers. You do not need to pay a large amount on the first day of the month, and you never pay for rides you did not take. The catch: you must use the same card or device all month. Two cards means two separate counts.

Discounts for students, seniors and low-income riders

Almost every city sells cheaper fares to some groups. You usually need a photo ID card from the agency or proof of income.

  • Toronto: youth $2.35, seniors $2.25 and Fair Pass (low income) $2.10 per ride, all with the same 47-fare cap. The TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass ($128.15) is still sold.
  • Vancouver: concession monthly pass $66.95 for all zones (youth and seniors). University and college students usually get a U-Pass through their school fees.
  • Montreal: reduced monthly pass $66 for ages 6 to 17, full-time students 18 and over, and people 65 and over. Residents of the Montreal area aged 65 and over ride free in Zone A.
  • Calgary: youth monthly pass $92; senior annual pass $169; Low Income Monthly Pass $6.30, $44.10 or $63.00, based on income.
  • Ottawa: senior monthly $59.75; EquiPass (low income) $58.25; Community Pass $43.25.
  • Edmonton: the Ride Transit program caps fares at $36 or $51 a month based on income. In our October 1 check, people who became permanent residents or refugees within the last year could qualify for the lower amount.
  • Winnipeg: WINNpass (low income) $59.70 a month.
  • Halifax: youth and senior monthly pass $66.
  • Mississauga and Brampton: the Peel Affordable Transit Program gives 50% off (MiWay discounted monthly pass $72.50). Seniors ride MiWay free with a senior PRESTO card, and Brampton residents 65 and over ride Brampton Transit free.

Should you buy a pass or pay per ride?

Divide the pass price by the single fare. The answer is the number of rides a month where the pass starts to save money. In Calgary it is 31.5 rides ($126 ÷ $4.00). In Winnipeg it is about 38.5 rides. A person who rides to work and back 5 days a week takes about 43 rides a month, so a pass usually pays off for a full-time commuter.

How we collect and update these prices

We take every fare from the transit agency’s own fares page. We show the regular adult price paid with the agency’s card, app or a bank card, because cash usually costs more and does not count toward caps. We do not include regional trains such as GO Transit or exo, which charge by distance.

Fares in Canada usually change on January 1 or July 1, and sometimes on September 1. We re-check this table on those dates. If you see a different price on the agency’s site, the agency is right.

Common questions

Which Canadian city has the cheapest monthly transit pass?
Among the big cities in our table, Halifax is the cheapest at $90 a month for adults (October 2026). Smaller cities such as Kelowna ($80) and Victoria ($85) are cheaper still.
Does Toronto still sell a monthly pass?
Not for most riders. The TTC stopped adult, youth and senior monthly passes on August 31, 2026. Adult rides are now free after 47 paid fares in a month. The Adult 12-Month Pass ($143 a month) and the Post-Secondary Monthly Pass ($128.15) are still sold.
Is a transit pass tax deductible in Canada?
No. The federal public transit tax credit ended in 2017. Some employers pay for transit passes as a benefit, so ask at work.
Can I use my bank card instead of buying a transit card?
In Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton and Vancouver you can tap a contactless credit or debit card. In Vancouver the tap fare is higher than the Compass card fare. Discounts for youth, seniors and low-income riders usually need the agency’s own card.
Do children ride free?
In many cities, yes. Children 12 and under ride free on the TTC, Calgary Transit, Halifax Transit and TransLink. Montreal’s reduced fare starts at age 6.
