Key takeaways

  • Plan by grams first, then by dollars.
  • Making charges can add a large share on top of the gold.
  • Buying gradually spreads the cost, but the price moves in between.

How much gold do you need for a wedding?

There is no fixed amount. It depends on your family’s traditions, the bride’s and groom’s wishes and your budget. Many South Asian families plan bridal sets, bangles and earrings for the bride, rings for the couple, and coins or small pieces as gifts. Start with a list, put a weight in grams next to each item, and agree on a total before you visit jewellers.

The planner turns grams into dollars at today’s price, adds the making charge you expect, and shows how much to put aside each month.

How to buy wedding gold without overpaying

  • Ask for itemised bills: gold weight, karat, gold rate, making charge and tax on separate lines.
  • Check the karat stamp (916 for 22K) and keep the receipt.
  • Compare making charges between shops for similar designs.
  • Ask about buy-back and exchange terms before you pay.
  • Coins and plain bands carry lower making charges than intricate sets.

How to set a wedding gold budget

Start from the total you can afford, not from a catalogue. Decide which pieces matter most to the family, such as the bridal set, and give them a weight first. Then fill the rest of the budget with smaller pieces or coins, which carry lower making charges. Remember to keep money aside for tax and for price changes: if the price rises 10% before you buy, a 100 g plan costs 10% more.

Gold given as gifts often comes from many relatives. Agreeing on who gives what can stop the family from buying more than anyone planned.

When is wedding season?

Many families plan weddings around auspicious dates, and many of those fall in the winter months. Jewellers are busiest in the weeks before Dhanteras, Diwali and the main wedding dates, so ordering custom sets early gives you time to compare quotes and to have pieces resized or adjusted. Buying coins or plain pieces through the year and exchanging them later is another way some families spread the cost, but check the jeweller’s exchange terms first.
