International price vs local rate.
International price in INR
The world gold price converted at today’s exchange rate. That’s what this page shows. It’s the fairest way to compare Punjab with Canada.
Typical local market rate
Jewellers in India quote a local rate that is higher than the international price converted to rupees, because gold imported into India pays customs duty and GST is added at sale. Local rates are set daily by jewellers’ associations and differ slightly from city to city. We don’t show a local market rate because we don’t have a licensed feed for it.

- Jewellery: Duty-free jewellery up to 40 grams for a female passenger or 20 grams for any other passenger, by weight only (no value cap). Only a resident or a tourist of Indian origin who has lived abroad for more than one year qualifies (Baggage Rules, 2026, rule 6, in force since 2 February 2026).
- Bars and coins: No free allowance. Gold or silver in any form other than ornaments is excluded from the general free allowance (Annexure I), so bars, coins and biscuits are dutiable from the first gram.
