Key takeaways
- TD sells TD-branded bars (1 g to 10 oz), Royal Canadian Mint bars (up to 1 kg) and Britannia bars. 5 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg bars are branch-only.
- TD customers who pay from a TD bank account get lower prices; card prices were about 3% higher on October 23, 2026.
- Small bars cost much more per gram: about 24% over the gold price for 1 g, about 2% for 1 oz and larger (October 23, 2026 snapshot).
- Online limit: $24,999.99 per 24 hours for TD customers, $2,999.99 for everyone else.
- TD clients can sell metal back at any TD branch; TD decides whether a product is fit to buy back.
What gold bars does TD sell?
On October 23, 2026, the TD Precious Metals store listed these gold bars:
- TD-branded bars: 1 g, 2.5 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 50 g, 100 g, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz online; 5 oz and 10 oz in branch only. There were also 2026 Diwali bars in 1 g, 5 g and 1/4 oz.
- Royal Canadian Mint bars: 1 oz, 50 g and 100 g online; 1 kg in branch only.
- Britannia bars: 1 g, 10 g, 20 g and 50 g.
TD says its 1 oz bar is minted by Valcambi, a refiner accredited by the LBMA (the London bullion market body). Each 1 oz TD bar has a serial number and comes sealed in tamper-proof plastic. Keep it sealed: it is easier to sell that way.
One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Indian and Pakistani shops often quote gold per tola, which is 11.6638 grams, or per 10 grams. A 1 oz bar is about 2.7 tola.
How much over the gold price do TD gold bars cost?
The price of a bar is the gold price plus a premium for making, shipping and selling it. TD says the market price “does not include manufacturing, transportation, or storage costs.” Its prices change every 15 minutes.
We compared TD’s listed prices with the gold price TD showed at the top of its store at the same time (late on October 23, 2026). These are TD Customer prices, paid from a TD bank account.
| Bar | Premium over TD’s gold price |
|---|---|
| 1 g TD bar | about 24% |
| 2.5 g TD bar | about 10% |
| 5 g TD bar | about 7.5% |
| 10 g TD bar | about 3.8% |
| 1/4 oz TD bar | about 4.5% |
| 1/2 oz TD bar | about 5.0% |
| 1 oz TD bar | about 2.2% |
| 1 oz Royal Canadian Mint bar | about 2.3% |
| 100 g TD bar | about 1.6% |
| 1 kg Royal Canadian Mint bar (branch) | about 2.0% |
Our sums, from TD’s own pages. Premiums move with the market and stock, so treat this as a one-day snapshot, not a quote. The live rate on this page lets you redo the sum on the day you buy.
Paying by card costs more. For the 1 oz TD bar, the credit or debit card price was 3% higher than the TD account price. Buying 10 or more bars lowered the price by less than 0.1%.
How do you buy a TD gold bar, and what are the limits?
You can buy online at TD Precious Metals, in a TD branch (TD customers), or, for TD customers, at some TD Foreign Exchange Centres that keep metal in stock. You do not need a TD account to buy online, but TD customers get “preferred pricing” when they pay from a TD bank account.
- Payment: Canadian-issued Visa or Mastercard credit cards, Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard, or an eligible TD chequing, savings or line of credit account. TFSAs, US dollar accounts and business accounts cannot be used.
- Online limit: $24,999.99 per 24 hours for TD customers, and $2,999.99 per 24 hours for non-TD customers. Larger orders can be placed in a branch, paid from a TD deposit account.
- Delivery: home delivery by Canada Post, or pick-up at a TD branch. TD customers can ship up to $2,999.99 per 24 hours to their home; larger orders go to a branch. Non-TD customers must ship to the billing address of their card.
- Shipping cost: free on orders of $500 or more; $10 plus tax below that. Parcels are insured until you sign for them.
- Timing: TD’s product pages say orders can take up to 5 business days to pack and then 2 to 7 business days to arrive; its FAQ says most orders take 5 to 15 business days in total.
Can you sell gold back to TD, and what is TD Secure Storage?
TD says its clients can sell physical or Secure Storage metal at any time. For physical bars and coins, you go to a TD branch and get a quote. TD “reserves the right to assess the precious metal product(s) and to determine whether they are fit to buy back.” You can be paid in Canadian or US dollars. TD also says you may have to report a capital gain or loss when you sell; ask a tax professional, and see our gold tax guide.
TD Secure Storage lets TD personal banking customers buy metal that stays in a fully insured vault run by Brink’s. The monthly fee for gold is $1.25 per ounce (standard rate), with a minimum of $9.95 a month, plus tax. You can sell online or in branch. To take the metal home, you request a withdrawal in branch; it is free for $500 or more, and $10 plus tax below that.
For a single 1 oz bar, the $9.95 minimum works out to about $119 a year before tax. Compare that with keeping the bar in a safety deposit box.
How do RBC, BMO, CIBC and Scotiabank compare?
| Bank | What we could confirm |
|---|---|
| TD | Online store open to everyone, branch buying for TD customers, published prices, buyback at branches, vault storage. |
| RBC | Sells Royal Canadian Mint gold: 1 oz and kilo bars, and Maple Leaf coins from 1/20 oz to 1 oz. Orders go through a branch. RBC buys back only metal it sold you, with proof of purchase. Prices are not published online. |
| CIBC | Sells 1 oz and 1 kg gold bars and gold coins online (after signing in to CIBC Online Banking) or in branch, with a $9,500 online limit per 24 hours. Buys back only products it sells, with the original receipt. |
| BMO | The Royal Canadian Mint (October 2024) says BMO sells bullion through BMO InvestorLine, BMO Nesbitt Burns and BMO Private Bank representatives, not at branch counters. We did not check its current prices. |
| Scotiabank | Stopped offering precious metals in early 2021, according to the Royal Canadian Mint. |
The Mint also notes that bank premiums are often higher than other sources, especially for small coins. Compare a bank quote with a dealer or the Mint before you buy, and ask how the bank will buy it back.
Is a TD gold bar right for you?
A TD bar can make sense if you want a known name, branch pick-up and a simple way to sell back. Things to weigh:
- Bar size. Buying ten 1 g bars costs far more than one 10 g bar. If you can, buy one larger bar.
- How you pay. Paying from a TD account was about 3% cheaper than a card on our snapshot day.
- Storage. Home storage is free but risky; a vault or safety deposit box costs money.
- Other ways to own gold. A gold ETF avoids bar premiums, and RemitBee Gold (our sponsor, coming early 2027) plans to sell pure 24K gold from $10 at the live market price with one 0.5% fee.
Gold prices can go down as well as up. Past prices don’t predict future prices. Check what the gold in a bar is worth with the gold value calculator, and compare with the gold price per gram in Canada.
