Key takeaways

  • Melt value = weight × purity × today’s 24K price per gram.
  • It works in grams, tola, 10 g units, troy ounces, vori and pavan.
  • Buyers pay less than melt value, so compare several quotes before you sell.

How is the value of gold calculated?

Gold is valued by the amount of pure gold it contains. The calculator multiplies three numbers:

  1. Weight, converted to grams (1 tola = 11.6638 g, 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g).
  2. Purity, from the karat: 24K is treated as pure gold, 22K is 91.6% gold, 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.5% and 10K is 41.7%.
  3. Today’s price of one gram of pure gold in Canadian dollars. We take the international price in US dollars and convert it at the Bank of Canada’s daily rate. The price updates while the page is open.

For example, 20 g of 22K gold holds 20 × 0.916 = 18.32 g of pure gold. If pure gold were $150 a gram, the melt value would be 18.32 × 150 = $2,748.

Why will a buyer pay less than melt value?

Melt value is what the gold content is worth on the international market. A buyer still has to test it, refine it and resell it, and take a margin. So offers are lower than melt value, and they vary a lot from buyer to buyer.

That is why the calculator shows what you would get at 90%, 80% and 70% of melt value. These are not typical rates. They are reference points, so you can see what an offer means in dollars. Get at least two or three quotes, and ask each buyer to weigh and test the piece in front of you.

How do I know the karat of my gold?

Look for a small stamp inside a ring, on a clasp or on the back of a pendant. Numbers show purity in parts per thousand: 999 or 24K, 916 or 22K, 875 or 21K, 750 or 18K, 585 or 14K and 417 or 10K. In Canada, marking gold with its quality is optional, but a quality mark that is used must be accurate and must come with a trademark. See the Competition Bureau guide in the sources.

Jewellery bought in India often has a BIS hallmark with “22K916”. If there is no stamp, a jeweller or refiner can test it. Don’t guess: the difference between 22K and 18K is about 18% of the value.

Common questions

How much is 10 grams of 22K gold worth?
Multiply 10 by 0.916 and by today’s 24K price per gram. The calculator above does this with the live price; the default example is 10 g of 22K gold.
How much is 14K gold worth per gram?
About 58.5% of the 24K price per gram, because 14K gold is 58.5% pure. Select 14K in the calculator to see it in dollars.
Does this include the value of diamonds or stones?
No. Weigh the gold only, or subtract an estimate for the stones. Gem value needs a separate appraisal.
