When is Dussehra 2027?
Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is on Saturday, October 9, 2027, in both Toronto and New Delhi. It celebrates the victory of good over evil: Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, and Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura. In many North Indian communities, Ramlila plays lead up to Dussehra and end with burning effigies of Ravana. In Canada, some temples and community groups hold Ravan Dahan events where fire rules allow. Dussehra falling on a Saturday in 2027 makes community events easier to attend.
How is Navratri celebrated in Canada?
Navratri traditions vary a lot by community:
- Garba and dandiya raas: Gujarati communities hold nightly dance events, often in rented halls, with the largest crowds on weekends.
- Fasting: many people fast or eat only certain foods for some or all nine days.
- Kanya puja: on Ashtami or Navami, young girls are honoured as forms of the Goddess.
