Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of the bright half of Vaishakha. In 2027 the Tritiya tithi starts and ends earlier by the clock in Canada than in India. So Drik Panchang lists Saturday, May 8 for Toronto and Vancouver, and Sunday, May 9 for New Delhi.

Drik Panchang gives gold purchase timings that cover the whole Tritiya tithi:
- Toronto: 2:12 AM to 6:01 AM (before sunrise, counted with Friday, May 7 in the Panchang), then 6:01 AM to 11:33 PM on Saturday, May 8.
- Vancouver: 11:12 PM on May 7 to 5:40 AM on May 8, then 5:40 AM to 8:33 PM on Saturday, May 8.
In practice, any time stores are open on Saturday, May 8 is inside the window in both cities. In Vancouver the tithi ends at 8:33 PM, so shop before then if timing matters to you.
Why is gold bought on Akshaya Tritiya?
"Akshaya" means never diminishing. Drik Panchang describes Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, as one of the most important days of the Hindu year. The merit of prayer, charity and good deeds done on this day is believed to last for ever. Buying gold, as jewellery or coins, is believed to bring prosperity in the future.
It is also one of the sade teen muhurat, the three and a half days of the year seen as auspicious all day. People start new businesses, move into new homes, buy vehicles and hold weddings on this day without needing to look up a separate muhurat. After Dhanteras, it is the second big gold-buying day of the Hindu year.
Many people also give to charity on Akshaya Tritiya. Gold is a custom, not a duty.
