Your days in Canada
An estimate for planning, not an official count. Keep your travel records and check with IRCC.
The rule
What the 730-day rule says.
IRCC says you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years to keep your PR status. The days do not need to be in a row. Some time outside Canada may also count, for example when you accompany a Canadian citizen spouse, common-law partner or parent, or work full-time abroad for a Canadian business or the Canadian public service.
If you have been a PR for less than five years, you can still meet the obligation as long as you will be able to reach 730 days within your first five years.
How we count
How this calculator counts days.
- It looks at the 5 years ending on the date you choose, or the time since you landed if that is shorter.
- The days you leave and return are not counted as days in Canada. This is the cautious choice and may undercount by up to two days per trip.
- Days abroad that qualify (for example with a Canadian citizen spouse) can be added in the box so they are included.
- Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
FAQ
Common questions.
Do I lose my PR status if I fall below 730 days?
Not automatically. An officer decides, and can take humanitarian and compassionate reasons into account. A formal determination can be made when you apply for a PR travel document, renew your card or enter Canada. If you may be short, speak to a licensed immigration consultant (RCIC) or lawyer.
Do the 730 days have to be consecutive?
No. They can be in any order within the 5-year period.
Which days outside Canada can count?
Days spent outside Canada accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse, common-law partner or parent, or working full-time for a Canadian business or the Canadian public service can count. Check IRCC’s guidance for the exact conditions.
What is the difference from the citizenship rule?
Citizenship needs 1,095 days in the 5 years before you apply. Meeting 730 days does not mean you meet that. Use our citizenship calculator for that rule.
Will you store my trips?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and is gone when you close the page.
