Using an Indian driver’s licence in Canada: exchange, tests and deadlines

You can drive in Canada on your Indian licence for a short time after you arrive. No Canadian province exchanges Indian licences, so you must pass a knowledge test and a road test. Proof of your driving experience in India can save you a year or more.

Key takeaways

  • No province has a licence exchange agreement with India
  • New residents can drive on an Indian licence for 60 days in Ontario, 90 days in BC and Alberta, and 6 months in Quebec
  • You will take a knowledge test and at least one road test
  • Prove your experience with your licence details from the Parivahan (Sarathi) portal; the Consulate in Toronto does not issue experience letters
  • In Ontario, 12 months of proven experience lets you take the G2 road test right away, then wait 12 months for the G test

Can I exchange my Indian licence for a Canadian one?

No. As of October 2026, India is not on the exchange list of any province we checked: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. You apply like a new driver, but your Indian experience counts in most provinces.

This is different from the U.S., the U.K. and many European countries, whose licences can be swapped without a road test. Compare all provinces in our licence exchange comparison.

How long can I drive on my Indian licence?

Once you live in a province, you have a short grace period:

  • Ontario: 60 days.
  • British Columbia: 90 days.
  • Alberta: new residents must exchange within 90 days.
  • Quebec: 6 consecutive months.
  • Manitoba: up to 3 months. Saskatchewan: 90 days.

Carry your Indian licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) together. The IDP is a translation; it does not extend these periods. If your Indian licence is in English, you may not need the IDP, but it does no harm. To renew an Indian IDP from Canada, you apply on India’s Parivahan portal. The Consulate General of India in Toronto only attests documents for the renewal; it does not issue IDPs.

How to prove your Indian driving experience

Canadian offices need official proof of the date you were first licensed. Ontario asks for a letter of authentication that is less than 6 months old and comes from the licensing authority, or from a consulate, embassy or high commission. It must show your name or licence number, date of birth, date first licensed, class, status and expiry date.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto says it does not issue such letters. It tells applicants to download the driving licence extract from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Parivahan portal and have it attested. Before you leave India:

  1. Check that your licence details on Parivahan (Sarathi) are correct, including the first issue date and the vehicle classes (LMV for cars).
  2. Download your driving licence extract and keep a printed and digital copy.
  3. If possible, ask your Regional Transport Office (RTO) for a signed letter that shows the details Ontario lists.
  4. Ask the Canadian office (DriveTest, ICBC, registry, SAAQ) which version it accepts before you book, and bring originals.

An old paper licence that was converted to a smart card or digital licence may show a recent issue date. Make sure your proof shows the date you were first licensed.

Rules for Indian licence holders by province

ProvinceWhat you doHow experience helps
OntarioVision and knowledge tests (G1), then G2 road test, then G road testSince July 1, 2026, at most 12 months of credit. With 12 months or more you can take the G2 test right away, then wait 12 months for the G test.
British ColumbiaKnowledge test and road testWith 2 years of non-learner experience you skip the novice (N) stage and can get a full Class 5.
AlbertaKnowledge test, surrender your licence, road testYou can ask for a review of your record that may shorten graduated licensing.
QuebecKnowledge test and road testYou need at least 1 year of experience to use this route. With less than 24 months recognized, you get a probationary licence. Failing the road test gives you a restricted learner’s licence.
ManitobaVision, knowledge and road testsWait 14 days after a failed test; after 3 failed road tests, 5 hours of lessons are required.

Example: an Indian driver in Ontario

Priya has driven a car in India for 6 years. She lands in Toronto in October 2026.

  1. She drives on her Indian licence for her first 60 days, with her IDP.
  2. She books a DriveTest visit, passes the vision and knowledge tests and pays $159.75 for the G1 package.
  3. She shows a letter of authentication. Ontario credits 12 months, so she can book the G2 road test right away.
  4. She passes the G2 test. She must now wait 12 months before the G road test ($91.25).

Before July 2026, someone like Priya could often go straight to the G test. Now the full G takes at least a year. Her insurance will also be priced as a G2 driver for that year, so she should get quotes early.

Tips to pass the road test

  • Drive on the right. Practise turns, lane changes and roundabouts until they feel natural.
  • Stop fully at stop signs and behind the line. Rolling stops are a common reason to fail.
  • Check blind spots with a shoulder check every time you change lanes or pull out.
  • Give way to pedestrians at crosswalks, and stop for school buses with flashing red lights.
  • Take a few lessons with a local instructor. They know the test routes and common mistakes. See the licence cost calculator to budget for them.

Checklist: what to do before you leave India

  • Renew your Indian licence if it will expire soon. Most provinces need it to be valid when you apply.
  • Check that your licence shows the LMV (light motor vehicle) class for cars, not only two-wheelers.
  • Download your driving licence extract from Parivahan and keep copies.
  • Get an International Driving Permit from your RTO for your first months in Canada.
  • Ask your car insurer in India for a letter that shows your policy years and claims.
  • If your documents are not in English, plan for a certified translation in Canada by a translator your province accepts.

Once you arrive, book your knowledge test early. In Ontario you have 60 days, and road test dates in the Greater Toronto Area can fill up fast.

Insurance with an Indian licence

Insurers price you as a new driver until you have a Canadian record. Ask your Indian insurer for a letter showing your claim-free years (your no-claim bonus history). Some Canadian insurers may count it; ICBC can recognize up to 15 years of foreign driving history. Get several quotes before you buy a car: see our first car guide.

Common questions

Can I convert my Indian driving licence in Ontario without a test?
No. Ontario does not have an exchange agreement with India. You must pass the knowledge test and road tests. Proof of 12 months or more of experience lets you take the G2 road test right away.
Is an Indian International Driving Permit valid in Canada?
An IDP is a translation that you carry with your Indian licence. It does not give you more time to drive as a new resident: you still need a provincial licence after the grace period, for example 60 days in Ontario.
Will the Indian consulate give me a driving experience letter?
The Consulate General of India in Toronto says it does not issue such letters. It tells applicants to download the driving licence extract from the Parivahan portal and have it attested.
Can I skip the G2 stage with Indian experience?
Not since July 1, 2026. Ontario now credits at most 12 months of experience from non-exchange countries, so you must hold a G2 for 12 months before the G road test.
Which province is easiest for an Indian licence holder?
None exchanges Indian licences, so all require tests. BC lets drivers with 2 years of proven experience skip the novice stage, and Quebec gives the longest grace period (6 months). Choose where to live for work and family, not for licence rules.
