How these data pages are built.

Plain-language definitions, sources and limits for every number in the Immigration Data Explorer, the Census Atlas and the Emigration Explorer.

Sources and licences

IRCC open data (permanent residents, study and work permits, asylum claimants, Express Entry invitations): published monthly on open.canada.ca under the Open Government Licence – Canada. Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada.

Statistics Canada (2021 Census of Population, population and migration estimates, the Longitudinal Immigration Database): Statistics Canada Open Licence. Adapted from Statistics Canada; this does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product.

canada.ca pages (levels plan, Express Entry rounds, processing times): facts are restated with a citation to the source page; we do not republish the pages. SettleCanada is not affiliated with the Government of Canada and these are not official publications.

Rounding and suppression

IRCC rounds each cell to the nearest 5 and replaces values from 0 to 5 with “--”. We count those as zero, so sums can be slightly below IRCC’s own totals and small groups can look smaller than they are. Statistics Canada randomly rounds census counts to multiples of 5 or 10 and suppresses areas with very small populations or low response; we show those as “not available”, never as zero.

Definitions

Permanent resident (admission): a person who became a permanent resident in that month, counted by country of citizenship and intended province or city. Study or work permit holder: a person whose permit took effect in that year; renewals count again. International Mobility Program (IMP): work permits without a labour market impact assessment, including post-graduation and spousal permits. Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP): work permits that usually need an LMIA. Asylum claimant: a person who asked for refugee protection in Canada; not a decision. Emigrant: a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who moved abroad and settled there, as estimated by Statistics Canada.

Census terms: visible minority, ethnic or cultural origin, mother tongue, language spoken most often at home, immigrant status and period of immigration follow Statistics Canada definitions in the Census Dictionary. Ethnic or cultural origin allows several answers, so shares add to more than 100%.

What we do not do

We do not forecast policy, estimate anyone’s chances, or rank or label communities or neighbourhoods. We do not collect personal data on these pages.

Updates

IRCC data: monthly, after IRCC’s mid-month release. Statistics Canada population and migration estimates: quarterly. Census Atlas: 2021 Census until the 2026 Census releases (first results February 2027; immigration and ethnocultural results expected October 2027). Each chart shows its data date.
